Library Design Awards and Showcase 2019

Four libraries have been short listed in the medium and large category of the 2019 SCONUL Library Design Awards.

University of Birmingham LibraryUniversity of Birmingham Library

The University of Birmingham’s new Main Library is striking. Its' contemporary style with distinctive fins and bold use of gold and grey colour makes it stand out as a hub of activity in what is a newly developed area of open social space. The Library sought to improve the user experience as well as highlight the University’s unique research and special collections. 

 

Liadlaw Library, University of LeedsLaidlaw Library, University of Leeds

The Laidlaw Library is an attractive and popular addition to the wide range of library and study spaces at Leeds. The vibrant and busy location aligns with the focus on undergraduate students and the street frontage, integration with heritage environment and iconic public art installation, is welcoming to the city and contributes to widening participation aspirations.

Templeman Library, University of KentTempleman Library, University of Kent

The Templeman library at the University of Kent stands proudly at the heart of the main university campus in Canterbury. It is effectively a substantial and impressive redesign and rebuild of the original library, featuring an innovative extension, which has enabled the university to realise many of its strategic teaching, learning and research ambitions.

 

University of Roehampton LibraryUniversity of Roehampton Library

Roehampton’s new library, positioned directly inside the main campus entrance, makes an impressive and deliberate statement about the place of scholarship and learning in the University. It is an interesting, attractive and well-designed building that has had a transformative effect on the library and campus as a whole.
